How Cigarette Filters Work: A Practical Guide
MINICO® Filters · April 2026 · 5 min read
Cigarette filters are small cylindrical devices that attach to the end of a cigarette before smoking. Their primary function is mechanical: they intercept and trap particulate matter — primarily tar droplets — carried in the smoke stream before it reaches the smoker. This guide explains how they work, what materials are used, and how to choose the right type.
The Mechanics of Filtration
When smoke travels through a cigarette filter, it passes through a porous medium that acts as a physical barrier. The filter material — typically cellulose acetate or polypropylene — presents a dense network of fibres. As smoke passes through:
- Large tar droplets impact and adhere to fibre surfaces (inertial impaction)
- Smaller particles are captured through diffusion as they collide with fibres during their random Brownian motion
- Airflow resistance is increased, slowing the smoke stream and extending contact time with the filter medium
This is purely a physical-mechanical process — no chemical reactions or additives are involved in conventional cigarette filters.
2-Stage Filtration: How MINICO® Works
Standard acetate filters in commercial cigarettes use a single layer of cellulose fibres. MINICO® uses a two-stage design that separates the filtration task into two distinct zones:
- Stage 1 — Coarse barrier: A denser outer layer intercepts larger tar particles and droplets at the point of entry.
- Stage 2 — Fine capture zone: A secondary inner layer with finer pore geometry captures smaller residue particles that pass through Stage 1.
The visible darkening of the blue filter element after use is direct evidence of accumulated tar residue — confirming that the mechanical filtration process is actively working.
Each MINICO® filter is designed for up to 6 cigarettes. When the element visibly darkens to a dark brown, it should be replaced with a fresh one from your resealable pack.
Filter Materials: What Matters
The material composition of a filter affects both its filtration efficiency and its physical properties:
- Cellulose acetate — Used in most built-in cigarette filters. Biodegrades slowly.
- Polypropylene — Used in MINICO® filters. Food-grade, BPA-free, inert, and dimensionally stable across a wide temperature range.
- Activated charcoal — Sometimes added to capture certain gas-phase compounds; generally found in premium or specialty filter products.
MINICO® filters are made from GMP-certified, food-grade polypropylene — the same class of material used in food packaging and medical device housings. No BPA, no plasticisers.
Choosing the Right Filter Size
Compatibility depends primarily on the cigarette's outer diameter:
- Regular (8mm) — Fits the vast majority of commercial cigarette brands, including king-size and standard-length formats.
- Slim / Superslim — Narrower diameter; requires a slim-specific adapter or filter.
- Roll-your-own — Filter tips for hand-rolling are separate products designed for insertion into rolling machines or hand-rolled cigarettes.
MINICO® fits regular 8mm cigarettes — the most common format globally. Simply push the filter onto the end of your cigarette until it seats securely, then smoke as normal.
Disposable vs. Reusable Filters
Most add-on cigarette filters fall into two categories:
- Disposable filters — Single-use or limited-use (3–6 cigarettes). Hygienic, no cleaning required. MINICO® is a disposable/limited-use design.
- Reusable holders — Typically a long cigarette holder in metal or plastic that can be cleaned and reused many times. Less practical for everyday carry.
Disposable filters like MINICO® offer a practical middle ground: they last multiple cigarettes, are compact enough to carry in a pocket or cigarette case, and require no maintenance between cigarettes.
Pack Sizes: Which One to Choose
MINICO® is available in four pack sizes to suit different usage patterns:
- Box 30 — Compact starter pack. Fits in a cigarette box.
- 350 Pack — Resealable bag. Ideal for everyday carry.
- 550 Pack — Best value for regular users.
- 1100 Pack — Bulk pack for maximum savings per filter.
